Owning Online Art. Study for a Netart-Gallery
Between 2006 and 2009, the applied research project Owning online Art. Study for a Netart-Gallery (OoA) examined the requirements for introducing internet-based art into the art market. Supported by the Institute of Art at the Basel School of Design / University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), the discussion on the commercialization and collectibility of internet art took place in dialog with an interdisciplinary team. The aim of the study was to encourage the DACollection / DAStore company in its initial stages and support it with research.
The research project Owning online Art debated several economies - such as the economy of the market, of innovation and of recognition (Dr. Simon Grand, St. Gallen University) or aspects of the economy for free, immaterial commodities (Dr. Felix Stalder, Zürich University of the Arts). Art historians devised media-historical considerations on the relationship between of internet art and the market (Prof. Peter Schneemann, Bern University) and studied the aesthetic context of selected works of internet art (Dr. Rahel Mader). The current and previous developments in the commercial supply and collecting of internet art was examined (Reinhard Storz, Basel School of Design, FHNW) as well as suggested ideas for the restoration of internet-based work (Tabea Lurk, Active Archive, Bern University of the Arts).
The study list is being further expanded by research into online payment systems and the specific art form of the screen saver (Beo von Arx); by research into examples of digital displays at art fairs and art exhibitions; and through an annotated bibliography on the theme of internet art and the economy.
A conference including discussions between scientists and artists and interviews with museum or collection curators, as well as both international and Swiss artists with experience in the internet-based art sector, will strengthen the empirical basis of the research (Markus Schwander and Isabel Zürcher, Basel School of Design, FHNW).
The artistic explorations of the Basel web designer and artist Esther Hunziker on the interface design of online art shows and archive collections, as well as the development of a wall console with an integrated minicomputer for interactive artwork by Zurich industrial designer Regula Büchel, create a "hands-on" element at the core of the project.
The applied research project is ultimately directly connected with the experience of supply for and collecting of digital media art, as illustrated in the collaboration with Roman Kurzmeyer who, as curator of the Ricola company's collection in Laufen, is taking his first steps in establishing a collection for internet-based art; or in the research partnership with Annette Schindler and Reinhard Storz who, as well as developing the DACollection / DAStore project, are also partners, co-researchers and beneficiaries of the applied research project Owning online Art.
Markus Schwander and Reinhard Storz take responsibility for the research project, which is coordinated by Isabel Zürcher. The project takes place under the auspices of the Institute of Arts, Basel School of Design / University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW).
